Investigators comb the scene of a murder in Whalley last summer.

Second man charged in Whalley murder

Donald Deweyn was stabbed to death in an altercation with two males in a parking lot near Surrey's Front Room drop-in centre

A second man has been arrested in relation to the killing of an elderly man in North Surrey last summer.

On July 25, 2014, Donald Deweyn, 63, was stabbed to death during a dispute with two other men in a North Surrey parking lot, in the 10600-block of 135A Street.

About a month later, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) arrested Dylan Dempsey, 23 and charged him with manslaughter in the death of Deweyn.

On Wednesday, IHIT announced it has arrested 28-year-old Tyson Cole, who is also charged with manslaughter in the case.

Deweyn was a retired mill worker, a widow and homeless at the time of his death. Deweyn had no criminal record and no negative contact with police.

Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, IHIT media relations officer, said IHIT placed a high priority on the file and worked “tirelessly” until charges were laid.

Surrey’s top cop, a former IHIT interrogator, was pleased with this week’s news.

“The thorough work done by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and all the officers involved has brought another successful investigation in front of the courts” said Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy. “We hope this will help bring closure to the family and friends of the victim.”

Cole is next due in Surrey Provincial Court on April 29.
