A Surrey RCMP investigation into a possible clandestine drug lab in Langley this week spilled over into South Surrey.
Officers wearing masks, gloves and other gear to protect them from hazardous materials were seen removing large bags from a unit at Sunnyside Storage, 15553 24 Ave. at around 9 a.m. Friday.
A witness said the bags were placed on a tarp surrounded by yellow tape, before being removed by a police vehicle.
Reportedly, police cars had been at the scene for most of the previous night.
Surrey RCMP spokesman Cpl. Bert Paquet confirmed Friday that the seizure of items from the unit was related to the execution of a search warrant at a Langley house on Thursday.
A 36-year-old Surrey man was arrested following the search of the house on 72 Avenue near 208 Street, which had been the subject of an RCMP investigation into a possible drug lab for several weeks.
Traffic on 72 Avenue was shut down for several hours Thursday while a hazardous materials handling team cleaned up chemicals found in the older one-storey detached house.
Following the execution of the Langley warrant, Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr said the house appeared to be the focus of "a large-scale operation."
On Friday, Paquet said "information and details" seized in Langley "led members to execute other search warrants," including the South Surrey storage unit.
No chemicals were found at the storage unit, he said "but a number of items were seized in connection with the investigation into the clandestine lab."
The suspect arrested Thursday was released, pending the approval of drug-related charges.
