The electoral district of South Surrey–White Rock goes to the polls today (Dec. 11) for the federal byelection.

Seven candidates are in the running for the MP’s seat vacated by Conservative Dianne Watts, who resigned in September to pursue a bid for leadership of the BC Liberal party.

The candidates are, in alphabetical order, Larry Colero (Green Party), Kerry-Lynne Findlay (Conservative), Gordie Hogg (Liberal), Michael Huenefeld (Progressive Canadian Party), Jonathan Silveira (NDP), Rod Taylor (Christian Heritage Party) Donald Wilson (Libertarian).

The 28 polling stations in the district, including stations at Semiahmoo Secondary School and the White Rock Elks Club, close at 7 p.m.

Voters who have not received a voter information card or have changed address are urged to visit elections.ca to check or update their voter registration and determine which polling station they should report to.

There are three kinds of ID that are accepted – either a driver’s licence, provincial or territorial ID card or any other government-issued card with photo, name and current address; or, alternatively two pieces of ID (such as health card, Canadian passport, birth certificate, social insurance card or citizenship card) one of which should include address (which can include current utility bills or official correspondence); or, if the ID does not have the current address, a person with up-to-date ID registered in the same polling district can attest that they know you and verify your address.

Elections Canada field liaison officer Debbie Fraser told Peace Arch News the ballots will be counted traditionally, by hand, and, depending on voter turnout, results should be known between 9 and 10 p.m.

“If it’s a close vote, then it could be quite a bit later before the final result is known,” she acknowledged.
