SURREY — Former Surrey Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal smote his rival Surrey lawyer Randeep Sarai with a commanding win of 4,562 votes to 2,221 for the party's MP candidacy for the new riding of Surrey-Newton Saturday.
Some party members stood in line for three and a half hours, braving the rain outside Tamanawis secondary school, while waiting for their turn to vote.
Dhaliwal served as Liberal MP for Newton-North Delta from 2006 to 2011 before current New Democrat MP Jinny Sims defeated him for the seat.
Both will square off in the new riding of Surrey-Newton in the next federal election, which is set for October but could be called sooner.
If a spring election is called, Dhaliwal said, "I'll be ready. I don't take anything for granted."
