A man is in police custody facing criminal charges after the attempted abduction of a four-year-old girl at a Surrey playground on the weekend.

Surrey RCMP say the father of the child called police on Saturday (June 21) after he noticed a man speaking to his daughter at the children's playground in Holland Park near Old Yale Road and 134 Street in Central Surrey.

The dad approached his child and asked what the man had said to her. Once he learned what was said (the details of which are not being released), the father approached the man and insisted he leave the park.

The man eventually left, police say, but returned a few minutes later wearing different clothing. When the child's dad saw the man had returned, he grabbed his daughter. The man then approached the father and child and began to shout at the dad, who phoned police.

When Surrey RCMP arrived, the man attempted to flee on a bike, but was arrested by police a few blocks away.

Adam Richard Beedle, 32, of no fixed address is charged with one count of attempted abduction of a person under 14, one count of uttering a threat and one count of possessing a controlled substance.

He made a court appearance Thursday morning.

“The father in this case did the right thing, he was keeping an eye on his child in the park, intervened when he was suspicious of an issue and when the situation became elevated he called police”, said Sgt. Dale Carr.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604‑599‑0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1‑800‑222‑TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca to remain anonymous.
