A Langley motorcyclist involved in a crash on the Haney Bypass on May 20 has died from his injuries.

Jay Easton, a 45-year-old firefighter from Surrey, went into cardiac arrest and died on Tuesday, June 2. His death comes following a collision with an SUV driven by an 89-year-old at 227 Street and the bypass on May 20.

Easton, a member of the Surrey Fire Department since July of 1996, was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital, but the injuries were believed to be non-life threatening at the time.

Constable Amanda Harnett said their thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends who are mourning his passing.

“This incident is being thoroughly investigated by Ridge Meadows RCMP, and the B.C. Coroner’s office,” said Harnett. “At the time of the collision, the motorcycle was travelling west on the Haney Bypass while the driver of the Cadillac SUV was eastbound making a turn onto 227 Street.”

On the Surrey Fire Fighters Association website, Easton is described as a selfless, with a caring nature and goodwill towards his coworkers and actively involved with the fire department.

Ridge Meadows RCMP said this is the sixth fatal collision in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in 2015, with motorcycles being involved in two.

Ryan Ferrier, a 43-year-old Maple Ridge paramedic, died in the crash when his motorcycle struck a transport truck on the Lougheed Highway and the corner of 105 Avenue on Thursday, Jan. 29.

A service for Easton is being held on Friday, June 12 at 10 a.m. at Peace Portal Alliance Church, 15128 27B Ave.
