SURREY — A young Surrey man has been charged with manslaughter in the stabbing of another young man in June.

Sukhpreet "Jesse" Shergill, 20, was arrested Wednesday (Oct. 29) in the June 19 stabbing of 22-year-old Mandepaak "Deepak" Chahal.

Police found Chahal, also of Surrey, lying on the road at 65B Avenue and 131st Street, a short stroll from St. Bernadette elementary school in Newton.

The officers had been responding to complaints about a brawl, at about 2 a.m. Chahal later died in hospital, becoming the sixth homicide of 2014.

Shergill appeared in Surrey provincial court on Thursday afternoon. Sgt. Adam MacIntosh, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, thanked the Surrey RCMP and "community of Newton" for helping investigators.

"We would like to extend our condolences once again to Deepak's family," he said.
