Surrey man charged in Vancouver murder

VANCOUVER — A Surrey man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a shooting in Vancouver five years ago.

Colin Victor Stewart, 32, of Surrey and Kevin James Jones, 35, of Vancouver were arrested Friday for the Sept. 29, 2009 murder of Rajinder Singh Soomel near Cambie Street and West 19th Avenue.

Soomel was found lying in the middle of the street after residents called 911 about gunshots. During their investigation, Vancouver Police homicide investigators determined that Soomel was not the intended victim and had been in the wrong place at the wrong time during this alleged gangland hit.

Police believe the killers had been gunning for Randy Naicker, who was later murdered in Port Moody on June 25, 2012. That murder has yet to be solved.

“Homicide investigations are often lengthy and pose unique challenges for police,” said Insp. Laurence Rankin, in charge of the VPD Homicide Unit. “We never forget, and remain committed and determined to solving these crimes.”
