DELTA — A man killed in a targeted shooting Friday in North Delta appears to have been at one time connected with Jujhar Khun-Khun of the notorious Dhak gang.

Arundeep Cheema, 24, of Surrey, was shot and killed around 8:20 p.m. Friday while sitting in his vehicle in the driveway of a home he was visiting on the 11800-block 75A Avenue, according to a release from Delta police.

Police said Cheema was known to them and the shooting appeared to be targeted.

Sgt. Sarah Swallow said the home Cheema was visiting was also known to police, who had “various dealings with the occupants of the house.”

A person named Arundeep Cheema was among four people that police documents indicated were arrested Sept. 24, 2012 following a drive-by shooting in Abbotsford, according to a 2013 report by the Abbotsford News.

Others arrested were Jujhar Khun-Khun, Manvir Chinna and Jagdeep Cheema, the paper reported.

Charges were not laid and none of the allegations has been proved in court, but Khun-Khun was among three men charged with first degree murder for the 2011 shooting death of Red Scorpions gang kingpin Jonathan Bacon outside a Kelowna casino. Khun-Khun is in custody and his trial is scheduled to begin on April 4, 2016.

He was linked to the Dhak gang, founded by brothers Gurmit Dhak, who was shot dead in his BMW outside Burnaby Metrotown in 2010, and Sukh Dhak, who was shot dead in a Burnaby hotel lobby in 2012.

Khun-Khun was present but unhurt when Gurmit Dhak was killed. He was seriously wounded during an attempt on Sukh Dhak’s life in Surrey in 2011 and was again wounded during an attack on a Dhak associate in Surrey in Jan. 2013. He was arrested shortly after in relation to the Bacon slaying.

Swallow said it was too early to tell if Friday’s shooting was gang-related, but said investigators will look at that possibility.

Because the shooting appears to be targeted, she said members of the public need not fear random attacks.

Court records show that an Arundeep Singh Cheema, born 1991, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance related to an offence in Delta in 2010, but both charges were dismissed.

Cheema was convicted with trafficking in a controlled substance related to an offence in Surrey in 2009.
