Surrey RCMP hosts public safety forum in Fleetwood Monday night

SURREY — The Surrey RCMP is hosting a public safety forum on Monday night in Fleetwood.

Mounties will be speaking about property and auto crime, how to keep your stuff safe, and when people should contact police.

There will also be a question and answer period.

The free public forum will be held at the Fleetwood Recreation Centre, at 15996-84th Ave., from 7 to 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Surrey RCMP is recruiting auxiliary volunteer constables. Applicants must be 19 or older, Canadian citizens, proficient in English, have at least a high school diploma, a valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence, live or work in Surrey, be physically fit and be able to commit at least two years to the program.

“There is no other training or volunteer experience like it,” said Bonnie Mellor, 44, who’s been in the program for five years. “I gained assertiveness and leadership skills I never knew I had in me. It’s given me a lot of confidence and been a real eye-opener for my development.”

John Vargas, a sawmill worker, has also been an auxiliary cop since 2001. “I have made some great friends along the way and had lots of neat experiences, he said. “Wherever I go, something seems to happen.”
