Surrey RCMP investigating purse snatchings in Newton, Whalley

SURREY — The Surrey RCMP is investigating a rash of purse snatchings in Newton and Whalley.

There has been at least five robberies since Dec. 9 and most happened in public areas such as parking lots. Four happened in the Newton town centre and the other was near Central City shopping centre.

The robbers are described as white men wearing hoodies.

Cpl. Bert Paquet said police have not determined if there is one or more robbers.

“We have increased our presence in the area with the support of enhanced foot patrols as well as increased patrols by the bike unit and members of the crime reduction and neighbourhood liaison units,” Paquet said. “Simple steps like trusting your instincts and being aware of your surroundings will help reduce the risk of being a potential victim.”
