On Monday morning, Surrey Search and Rescue (SSAR) teams were shocked to find their compound broken into, trucks smashed and gear stolen.
Some time during the night, thieves cut through a chain link fence to access the Newton facility, then broke in and put two trucks out of commission.
That's when the culprits stole some crucial rescue gear valued at about $5,000.
Missing is a generator and 9.9 horsepower Yamaha outboard engine for a boat.
The thieves have put the rescue team at a disadvantage over the winter break.
"I hope they get a lump of coal," said SSAR director Michael Surbey. "I hope we don't have to utilize our resources to rescue them at some point."
Surbey said it's a huge setback to fund raising for the "100 per cent volunteer organization," which now must raise funds to replace equipment.
Anyone with information about the missing equipment, or who may have perpetrated the act of vandalism, is asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
