The brother of one of two men sent to prison for life for killing six men in Surrey in 2007 has been arrested in Alberta and charged in connection to the mass murder.

Justin Haevischer, 28, was arrested Monday (Dec. 22) after causing a disturbance on a plane leaving Edmonton. He was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and is charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder, which the Crown has now confirmed is related to the Surrey Six case.

Justin is the brother of convicted multiple murderer Cody Haevischer.

Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston were each found guilty of six counts of first-degree murder and one of conspiracy to murder for the mass slaying of six men in a Surrey apartment on Oct. 19, 2007. They were sentenced earlier this month to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

The lengthy trial heard while they planned to rob and kill rival drug dealer Corey Lal, they also murdered his brother Michael, associates Ryan Bartolomeo and Eddie Narong, as well as fireplace repairman Ed Schellenberg and neighbour Christopher Mohan to eliminate any witnesses.

Justin Haevischer is scheduled to appear in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on Christmas Eve.

A year ago, during the Surrey Six trial, Cody Haevischer's ex-girlfriend testified she and Justin helped dispose of clothing and cellphones following the mass murder.

The woman, who can only be identified as K.M. due to a publication ban, said she was at her Surrey apartment when Cody Haevischer and Johnston returned after an hour-long outing. She said she had helped clean guns and ammunition with Windex before they left, but didn't know where they had gone.

It was "hectic" when they returned, K.M. testified, and she saw Cody and Justin boiling cellphones in a pot of water on the stove. Cody, she said, was writing notes to his brother on an erasable white board, including "people died."

K.M. said she was told to grab a bag containing clothes Cody had been wearing and the boiled cellphones. She testified she and Justin Haevischer went out and bought a can of gas and drove to an empty lot in Surrey where the bag and its contents were burned.
