A Surrey school teacher has been disciplined for making demeaning personal comments to students.
According to a consent resolution agreement posted online by the B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch, Brent Sutter told a female student “the make-up doesn’t help you” and another time, responded to a Grade 11 student’s comment by calling her a “dumb blonde.” He also teased a Grade 8 student by repeatedly mispronouncing her name, mocked a student’s choice in vehicles and called a male student a “dumb ass.”
Sutter was also cited for making personal comments about hair or appearance to female students that made them uncomfortable and making “unnecessary physical contact” with students, such as roughhousing, “tapping” them on the back of the head and once, kicking a girl in the rear end.
The incidents took place during the 2010-11 school year. Sutter must take two courses about respecting boundaries and creating a positive learning environment by September 2016.
