Surrey teen charged in convenience store robberies

SURREY — A 16-year-old male from Surrey has been charged in relation to two convenience store robberies earlier this month in Guildford.

According to Surrey RCMP, the youth is now facing two counts of robbery and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon after two convenience stores were robbed a week apart at the beginning of August.

On Aug. 1, police allege the male produced a knife and bear spray as he robbed a convenience store located in the 15100-block of 96th Avenue. Then, on Aug. 7, two males robbed a convenience store in the 10000-block of 152nd street. In the latter incident, police say no weapons were used but the two suspects used threatening language to intimidate the victim.

After opening up an investigation, police used a combination of seized video surveillaance and help from the Robbery Unit to identify the 16-year-old suspect, who was arrested Aug. 13. He has since been formally charged and was relesed to his parents with conditions.

Police the invesitgation continues as they continue to identify the second male involved in the Aug. 7 incident.
