Border officers at Pacific Highway seized 17 bricks of suspected cocaine from a northbound vehicle last October.

Canada Border Services Agency has announced the seizure of 17 bricks of suspected cocaine, found in a northbound vehicle last fall at the Pacific Highway crossing.

According to a news release issued Monday morning, the seizure occurred Oct. 23, after a female traveller was referred for secondary examination.

The driver, a 42-year-old Surrey woman, was arrested after two bricks of the suspected illicit substance were found under the vehicle's rear seat. Further examination of the vehicle located an additional 15 bricks throughout the vehicle.

The drugs weighed 16.85 kilograms in all. The seizure was among 574 narcotics seizures at the South Surrey port last year – a number nearly double that seen in 2015, when 301 seizures were logged.

Just 99 such seizures were recorded at the port in 2011.

CBSA communications officer Kristine Wu could not speculate on the latest increase.

The woman arrested Oct. 23 was turned over to Surrey RCMP, along with the suspected narcotics.

Sgt. Alanna Dunlop told Peace Arch News the case remains under investigation by officers with the Mounties' drug unit.
