A sudden drop in temperature triggered a one-night-only extreme weather warning that opened temporary shelters to homeless people in White Rock and Surrey overnight Tuesday.

Peter Fedos, the extreme weather coordinator for the region, issued the order after forecasts called for a drop below freezing temperatures at night.

That made 60 beds available at Surrey Urban Mission on 13388 104 Ave., 15 at Cloverdale Christian Fellowship at 17802 66 Ave. and 15 at First United Church in White Rock on 15385 Semiahmoo Ave.

Fedos said White Rock and Surrey have been experiencing more extreme weather warnings than other areas of Metro Vancouver.

"It tends to get colder here," he said.

"We've been pretty busy."

The warning was lifted and the shelters were shut down Wednesday morning.
