A device cleared from the SkyTrain track has the "earmarks" of a pipe bomb, according to the spokesperson for the Transit Police.
Anne Drennan said the SkyTrain had just been cleared of the device by the bomb disposal unit and the trains were back up and running at about 5 p.m. Friday.
"The explosives unit from the RCMP went in on a trolly, and picked it up and rendered it inert," Drennan said. "I can tell you at this stage, it has all the earmarks of a pipe bomb."
Hours before, police shut down SkyTrain between Scott Road and Gateway stations after the potential explosive was found on the tracks.
"It's a suspicious package that's on the SkyTrain tracks," said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger. "As a result of not knowing what it is exactly, and the potential for explosive activity, we've shut down the SkyTrain" between the two stops.
He said it appears the device consists of three small gas stove-type propane canisters strapped together with a fire extinguisher.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people were queued up Friday afternoon waiting for the SkyTrain service to resume.
Police are continuing their investigation and will examine the device and closed circuit TV camera footage from around the SkyTrain.
