A 13-month-old boy is in serious, but stable condition after falling three metres out a window onto the pavement Sunday afternoon.

The boy's 16-year-old sister was holding the tot on a ledge by a window that was open, but had a screen covering it.

The young one struggled free and fell backward through the second-floor window of the 7200-block 131 Street home and onto the pavement.

He suffered a fractured skull and broken leg.

He was taken by air ambulance from nearby Princess Margaret Secondary School to a nearby hospital.

Police say he is in serious condition, but is expected to make a full recovery. Brain damage is not suspected.

RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said Monday it's a reminder for people not to rely on screen windows as any kind of safe barrier to keep children from falling through.

Surrey has experience three such falls this year, with eight in the region – the last one being a fatal fall in Vancouver after the child fell six storeys.

"Be mindful, that screen, it's a false illusion of security," Grainger said. "There's nothing to stop anyone from going through those things, especially young children."
