Transit Police are looking for a man who intervened in a domestic assault – and was then attacked by the knife-wielding suspect – at the Surrey Central SkyTrain station last month.

According to police, a woman was assaulted by her common-law husband on June 24 at about 8:40 p.m. The man struck his wife in the face, grabbed her hair and hit her face a second time.

A passerby intervened and was attacked by the suspect. A second person then came to the aid of the first man and was also attacked by the husband, who brandished a four-inch knife and slashed at him several times before fleeing the station.

"We would very much like to identify and speak to this witness/victim about this incident and to commend him for the selfless actions he took that evening," said a Transit Police release.

While officers were able to talk to the first witness, the second one had left the scene prior to the police arriving.

The unidentified man is described as a black male in his early 20s with close-cropped hair and clean shaven. He was wearing a short-sleeved striped shirt, a white hooded vest and knee-length shorts. (He can be seen at the end of the video above and in the photo below).

The suspect who attacked his wife was found at his Surrey home the following day. Argelio Mejia-Diaz, 51, was charged with two counts of assault and one of assault with a weapon. He was released from custody with conditions that he not contact his wife or be near their residence. He breached those conditions and was arrested again July 11.

Anyone who knows the identity of the second man who intervened in the June attack is asked to call Transit Police at 604-515-8300 or to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
