SURREY — Two people were sent to hospital in critical condition after a Jeep and a van crashed in Newton early Saturday evening.

One of the vehicles then struck four pedestrians standing on the corner and one of the pedestrians was pinned underneath it.

It happened at 138th Street and 72nd Avenue, at about 6:45 p.m.

One of the vehicles was turning left onto 72nd Avenue when it was broadsided. Police said two of the pedestrians were take to hospital with life-threatening injuries, a third was seriously injured and the fourth sustained minor injuries.

Police said both drivers remained at the scene and that drugs or alcohol weren't factors in the crash, which is still under investigation.
