Two Surrey houses ablaze in weekend fires

SURREY — Two major house fires took place in Surrey over the weekend.

On Saturday night at around 7:30 p.m., a home in the 9400-block of 49th Street caught fire, with attached garage fully involved and flames spreading into the attic.

Firefighters on scene prevented fire from spreading to the whole house, as all occupants and their dog got out safe. The fire was not suspicious.

Another house fire the following night, however, does look to be suspicious.

Just before midnight on Sunday, a house in the 13800-block of 64th Avenue was fully engulfed in flames.

Surrey RCMP attended the residence, which they say has been vacant for some time.

The same house has been the target of arson two times previous in the past few months, with a fire started inside the home on Jan. 20 by squatters who were temporarily living there.

Before that, on Nov. 18, 2014, a small fire was started near the rear of the house, but RCMP found no one inside or near the home.

Police said there are no suspects yet, but evidence suggests that the fire was started on purpose.
