UPDATE: 2 confirmed dead in Marysville, Washington school shooting

Police confirmed that the school's suspect shooter – who was a student at Marysville Pilchuck – is dead, along with another person.

Reports say a student at Marysville-Pilchuk opened gunfire on his school on Friday morning in Washington State. Police say the gunman is dead and four people are reportedly hurt.


UPDATE (2:35 pm PST) – Police confirm two people are dead after a shooting this morning at Marysville Pilchuck High School – the suspected shooter (since identified by his family as 14-year-old Jaylen Fryberg) and a female student are the two deceased.

Marysville Police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux has confirmed that two people are dead after a shooting at Marysville Pilchuck High School – one of the deceased is the shooter and the other is a female.

Both were students at the school and the shooting took place in the school's cafeteria, Lamoureux said.

Lamoureux says he did not know if there was a relationship between the female and the shooter and said the "shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

"I don't have real specific details, so it wouldn't be a good idea for me to put those out there at this time," the Commander said, adding that he couldn't confirm what weapon was used and that there would be another media briefing scheduled for 5 p.m. PST.

"Only law enforcement is on scene (at the school) with any students or staff – approximately 30 of them – that were witnesses" of the shooting, Lamoureux said.

"What we have today is an act of shooting," he said. "The scene is secure, we have now transitioned from a dynamic scene to an investigative scene."

Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring also spoke at the 2:30 media briefing and said, "There's really no words to describe this kind of tragedy."

UPDATE (2:20 pm PST) – The lone shooter (confirmed dead) has been identified by his family as Jaylen Fryberg, a 14-year-old student at Marysville Pilchuck.

The shooter has been identified as freshman football player Jaylen Fryberg. According to a KIRO-TV reporter, an uncle said his nephew was "not a monster, he is a very nice kid.

And a Crossfit coach, also a tribal member, interviewed by KIRO said that Fryberg was an ambitious young man seen by some as one of the young leaders of the Tulalip Tribes.

Earlier this month he was voted freshman Homecoming King. And he recently brought his grandmother a deer. Feeding elders wild game is an act of great cultural significance.

News outlets have begun pulling what they can from Fryberg's reported Twitter account, such as photos and status updates.

His last post on Twitter was published at 11:17 a.m. on Thursday morning (October 23):

Two people have been confirmed deceased after a gunman opened fire at Marysville Pilchuck High School (in Washington state) on Friday morning.

Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux confirmed the two deaths at 1:05 p.m. on Friday – he said one deceased is the shooter, who was a student at Marysville Pilchuck, but Lamoureux would not say whether the other deceased was another student or a staff member.

(Lamoureux said he will have more information to release at 2:30 p.m. PST.)

Four people have or are being taken to hospitals in the area – three patients were received at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and another was expected to be sent to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. A hospital spokeswoman told the Everett Herald that Harborview was not expecting to receive any more patients.

KIRO 7 reported (via a hospital spokesperson) that the patient at Harborview was male. The three injured patients are reportedly critical, and KIRO also reported that they "looked young".

UPDATE (1:29 p.m. PST) – Dr. Joanne Roberts, speaking for Providence Medical Center, said the three students in critical have survived, but are still in critical condition.

Roberts would not elaborate on the specifics of the patients' injuries, but did say there were two females and one male, "they were all young people" and that they suffered "head wounds".

The Herald reported that gunfire first erupted in the school's cafeteria before 11 a.m., and also interviewed a parent from the school – Jery Holston – who has a son and daughter who attend Marysville Pilchcuk. They both called him to tell him they were alright.

"My kids, I can tell you, are both hysterical. They are freaked out," Holston told the Herald, adding that his son told him he took cover behind a dirt pile near the school's football stadium.

"My heart dropped in my stomach," Holston said.

The school was under lockdown for two hours while police completed a sweep and search of the school, but students are now being let outside.
