Burnaby RCMP arrested three people less than 24 hours after a man was shot at Royal Oak SkyTrain station during Tuesday afternoon's rush hour.

A 22-year-old Surrey man is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after what police are calling a "targeted shooting."

“The RCMP quickly identified the suspects in yesterday’s brazen Skytrain shooting, and we located them in Surrey,” said Burnaby RCMP spokesman Sgt. Ted De Jager. “We attempted to stop their vehicle but the suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran away. However, after a short foot pursuit I’m very happy to say we have all three in custody.”

The suspects arrested include a 22-year-old man from Surrey, identified as the shooter, an 18-year-old Burnaby man and a 15-year-old boy from an undetermined area.

Police are considering recommending charges of attempted murder against the shooter, while charges are pending against the other two suspects.

Several 911 calls were received at about 5:10 p.m. Tuesday reporting shots being fired at the SkyTrain station.

The victim managed to get onto the SkyTrain and travel to Edmonds station where officers found him. He was taken to a local area hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

The busy time of day meant there were numerous witnesses, De Jager said.

“We recognize that this was a frightening event for the public, but we wish to reassure everyone that investigators have determined this was a targeted shooting.”
