UPDATE: Police release names of couple in apparent murder-suicide

Double homicide took place at home in Newton last week.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has released the names of the two victims in last week’s double homicide in Surrey.

Dead are 49-year-old Dilber Singh Atwal and 30-year-old Gurpreet Kaur Atwal. The couple had been married since 2002.

Police are still investigating the suspicious deaths that took place in Newton on Wednesday, June 19.

At about 10:30 p.m., police were called to a report of a disturbance at a home at 6773 145A St. They entered to find the South Asian couple dead.

Witnesses had heard some people arguing prior to the discovery of the two bodies in the home, in what is believed to be a domestic murder-suicide.

Witnesses at the scene said they knew the couple well, and that there had been several instances over the past 10 years when the police had been called for complaints of a disturbance.

IHIT is not releasing further details at this time.
