Update: Surrey man charged under Mental Health Act after helicopter search

GUILDFORD — Surrey RCMP apprehended a Guildford man under the Mental Health Act on Saturday afternoon following a manhunt involving police helicopters.

They were looking for a 33-year-old man who allegedly smashed up his own vehicle and slashed its tires.

His wife called police around 10:30 a.m. Friday and said he was emotionally distressed. She told police he had a knife, but didn't know if he still had it on him.

"He caused damage to his own vehicle," Cpl. Bert Paquet said. "He had not threatened anyone or hurt anyone. It was not a criminal incident."

Police alerted three schools in the area, Paquet said, "out of an abundance of caution."
