Update: Surrey woman accused of bus freakout, assaults on children

LANGLEY — Surrey woman Leah Susan MacKay has been charged with uttering threats, assault and two  counts of assault with a weapon related to a shocking incident that spilled off a bus in Langley earlier this week.

MacKay, 43, allegedly threatened a fellow bus rider with a knife, threw a drink at her baby, kicked her two-year-old daughter in the back and knocked down her four-year-old daughter. She was scheduled to appear in Surrey provincial court Friday morning.

This disturbing story began on a bus in Langley, at about 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Cpl. Holly Marks, of the Langley RCMP, said the accused and bus driver got into an argument about her not paying her fare.

The alleged victim and other passengers called on the woman to stop swearing in front of the children passengers.

MacKay allegedly responded by threatening to kill the victim and her children, and chucking a drink at the victim’s baby son, not yet a year old.

The two women began to fight, Marks said. Both exited the bus and the victim began walking toward Willowbrook Mall, on the Fraser Highway side.

Marks said the suspect ran after her, pulled out a knife, knocked the victim’s four-year-old daughter over, and then kicked her two-year-old daughter in the back.

“Once officers received the report, the suspect description was broadcast to police in the area,” Marks said. “A Surrey RCMP officer recognized the description as someone he had dealings with in the past, attended her residence and arrested the 43-year-old by 10:40 a.m.”

“She lives just on the Surrey side of our border,” Marks said.
