A women lost both her legs when she was hit by a truck while she was waiting for a bus in the Guildford area of Surrey.

Just before 8 a.m. Monday (June 30), a GMC van was traveling southbound on 148 Street when it as hit by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that was heading westbound on 88 Avenue.

Police said witnesses at the scene say the truck ran a red light before it hit the van.

The impact sent the truck into a bus stop where two women were waiting for a bus.

The impact severed both legs of a 34-year-old woman sitting at the bus stop, while a 22-year-old woman who was only a couple of feet away sustained only minor injuries.

Some Good Samaritans stopped and stemmed the woman's bleeding, which is likely why she survived, police said.

As of Wednesday, the woman was still in critical condition.

Both drivers involved remained at the accident scene. The Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) is investigating with the assistance of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS).

Charges are expected against the driver of the truck, police said.

Because of the complexity of traffic investigations, it will likely take more than a year for the case to go to court, if charges are approved.

Anyone with further information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
