Today is voting day in B.C.

B.C. voters are heading to the polls today in a much-anticipated contest where the outcome is far from certain.

Ridings in Surrey and North Delta are considered to be key battlegrounds, partly because many saw tight races in the last election.

What’s more, there are four ridings (out of nine) without incumbent MLAs, meaning anything could happen.

Those ridings are Delta-North, which was left vacant by the B.C. NDP’s Guy Gentner; Surrey-Tynehead, where B.C. Liberal Dave Hayer has chosen not to run; Surrey-Cloverdale, vacated by Liberal Kevin Falcon; and Surrey-Panorama, where Liberal Stephanie Cadieux left in favour of running in Cloverdale.

Surrey-Panorama is also a riding to watch as Surrey Coun. Marvin Hunt is running for the Liberals there. If he wins, Surrey could be headed for a municipal byelection.

Polls have been all over the place leading up to the election, first placing the NDP far in the lead, then showing the party with only a marginal lead over the Liberals.

The B.C. Green party and B.C. Conservatives can’t be written off in this contest either, with both parties fighting hard to grab a seat or two.

To read profiles of Surrey and North Delta candidates, as well as view maps of the riding boundaries, go to surreyleader.com and click on the red “Election” tab near the top of the site.

The polls will close at 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, May 14).

To vote, bring your voter registration card. If you don’t have that, you’ll need one of the following:

• Picture ID from the federal or provincial government;

• A certificate of Indian status;

• Two documents, such as utility bills, that together show your name and address. Both must show the voter’s name, and at least one must have the voter’s address.
