By the numbers: 2017 Surrey shootings, crashes and more
Drive-by shootings continued to plague Surrey in 2017. Mounties responded to 59 shootings compared to 61 in 2016 and 88 in 2015.
BC Coroners Service reports that 117 people died of fentanyl-related drug overdoses in Surrey in 2017. That’s up from 74 in 2016, 11 in 2015, 8 in 2014 and 4 in 2013.
In 2017, 19 people were killed in crashes , compared to 14 the prior year.

Big battles waged in Surrey in 2017
The past year saw some major battles fought on several fronts, on the city beat, in public school curriculum and of course the Surrey’s pivotal role in May’s provincial election.
Many issues have yet to conclude, including a fight about a road through Hawthorne Park and the decades-old illegal suites issue.
