Ernest Delmor (Del) Thachuk, 82, of White Rock, B.C, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at his home. Born in Lamont, Alberta to Nicholas and Pearl Tkachuk, Del spent his early years as a child on the farm in Andrew, Alberta before moving to Edmonton. Del’s dream of becoming a professional football player came true in 1959 as the hometown boy earned a spot on the roster of the Edmonton Eskimos. He was subsequently traded to the B.C. Lions, eventually settling in White Rock, British Columbia, where he raised his family.
A kind and generous man with a passion for sports, Del coached both amateur football and hockey for decades. He loved coaching young athletes and went above and beyond to make sure everyone had an opportunity to play. Over the course of decades, Del left his mark on many athletes, inspiring and helping them to reach their potential. A free spirit and entrepreneur with an unforgettable sense of humor, Del led a life full of adventure. He was always willing to share memories and was a “great story teller” of his life. In his twilight years, Del’s focus was his family.
Survived by his wife of 58 years and best friend, Kit, three sons and their spouses, Todd Thachuk of California (Julie), Mike Thachuk of Aldergrove (Carrie), and J.T. (Jeff) Thachuk (Anya) of White Rock, granddaughters Dr. Jessica Troxell (Mike) and Alexandra Wicks (Luke) of California, and here close to home Laurel Thachuk, Sophia Thachuk, and grandsons Max Thachuk, Mike Thachuk, and Ryan Thachuk, his sister Helen (Clarence) Aab of Calgary, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Del was a well loved man who will be greatly missed but not forgotten.
A celebration of Del’s life will be held on Friday, December 7, 2018 at 7 pm at Centennial Arena in White Rock, 14600 North Bluff Road. Come share the stories and memories of Del’s’ life, a life well lived.
