Garnet Gladwyn McDermid

March 29, 1919 - September 27, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Garnet Gladwyn "Gar" McDermid.

"Gar" was born in Stoughton, Saskatchewan on March 29th, 1919; he passed away peacefully on September 27, 2017 at George Derby Veteran's Home.

Gar was one of the last few WWII veterans.  He served his country selflessly for the duration of the war and was recently presented with a medal of honour and thanks by the French Government for his participation of the Liberation of France.

Gar and his family moved to Cloverdale in 1954 where he remained until his move to George Derby in 2007.

Gar is predeceased by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert McDermid, his brothers Cairns and Bert and his sister Marjory, his lovely wife Kathleen "Kay" (2009) and his beautiful daughter Barbara Lynn (2016.).

He leaves behind his son Ian, his sister Edith, grandchildren Daniel Barker (Sarah), Ashley Barker (Byron Cogin), Michael McDermid (Anja) and Aisnley Beattie (Timber).

He is also survived by his great grand children Hope and Rhodes Beattie, Isaac and Everett Cogin, Sam and Kaya Fraser, several  cousins, nieces and nephews.

Gar will mostly be remembered for his ability to pick up the fiddle at the drop of a hat and entertain the family or the lovely people at George Derby.

In his youth, he was part of a band that performed at various venues in the Saskatchewan country side.

Gar did not want to have a funeral; therefore, the family will have an intimate gathering at a later date.

He will be greatly missed.
