Mary Petronella Adams passed away Nov. 13 at Peace Arch Hospital at the age of 83.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Jim, her two stepchildren, Jake and Anya, daughter-in-law Maria, and grandchildren Isaiah and Lucille.

Mary survived WWII under German occupation, the Soviet Occupation of both the country and her family home, the loss of a lung to tuberculosis at 19, the Hungarian Uprising in 1956, and a harrowing escape through the border minefields to Austria.

She emigrated to Canada in 1957 with just three dollars and three English words - yes, no and sure - but fashioned a rich life, including marrying Jim Adams in 1981.

Bonded by a love of art, travel, culture and especially good food, they lived a quiet life together. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
