I am writing to express consternation and opposition to my government’s attempt to introduce legislation to liberalize the access of the police to Internet communication under the guise that the “Internet predators” legislation is necessary to prosecute child pornography offenders.
This is a terrible intrusion into the privacy of Canadian citizens and would not be necessary if the police and the court system were working properly.
Furthermore, it was offensive to hear Public Safety Minister Vic Toews proclaim to another Member of Parliament that we “can either stand with us or with the child pornographers.”
My uncle was killed in the First World War and my father served in the Second World War in an effort to prevent governments from snooping into people’s lives and engaging in oppression.
I believe that Minister Toews should be fired or demoted for this offensive legislation and his conduct in the House of Commons.
