Civilian agency a must for police oversight

On the basis of international codes of ethics for law enforcement officials, we must develop a police oversight mechanism which can be used for the monitoring of compliance with ethical-professional standards in the field of policing.

An external and independent civilian oversight agency must be more accessible to the public. It should be formed to work in conjunction with the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner, which must receive expanded powers and resources.

These two bodies would accept complainants from an individual who might otherwise have been reluctant to complain to a police officer in a department’s internal affairs unit.

Will the B.C. government move forward and affect the changes necessary to ensure the public interest in maintained?
