Halfway houses uglier than signs

Surrey - The Editor, Re: "Surrey bylaw zeroes in on ugly, cluttered signs," the Now, March 4. Our family owns and operates a sign rental business. The "ugly signs" you speak of help businesses generate customers. It also feeds our family and helps put a roof over our heads. I find your comments - and your bylaw - very offensive.

You know what I find ugly? The halfway houses your council approves in quiet family neighbourhoods like Clayton Heights and Cloverdale - halfway houses that are blocks from schools and daycares. The crime in Clayton is ugly. But yeah, let's focus on the signs on the side of the road that generate business for the hard-working people of Surrey, all the while approving halfway houses in lovely suburban neighbourhoods. That way, we can increase crime in those areas and defer the crime from other wellknown bad areas of Surrey - so Watts and council can pat themselves on the back and say, "job well done" in cleaning up Newton.Great job Coun. Bruce Hayne. It's funny how you don't have a problem letting Mr. Pattison put up one of his giant distracting signs. Wonder why?Cari YorkeSurrey
