Homelessness was a hot topic at the Union of BC Municipalities conference this Monday.

The Editor,

Re: “‘Stop stealing our stuff,’ homeless say,” the Now, Sept. 29.

The homeless, be they in Surrey or elsewhere in the Lower Mainland, are being aided and abetted by the Pivot Legal Society, who make a good living doing what they do.

I wonder how many lawyers from Pivot live in a neighbourhood where there is constant criminal activity, where women and seniors fear walking down the street lest they be accosted and where children can’t use playgrounds because of discarded needles.

There are no doubt homeless people who need help, but we need to stop encouraging their destructive behaviour. We need to help those who want help and penalize those who use poverty as an excuse to be criminals.
