LETTER: Ward system would give Newton an ally

The Editor,

Re: "Surrey to hold safety meeting," the Now, Jan. 7.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts told the Now that she believes higher levels of government need to help in regulating recovery houses in our city. This didn't stop Watts and her council going against their own city planners, when they pushed through the "Welcome Home" facility in Newton that will house 200 recovering addicts. The residents of Newton stood up against this, but it was pushed through - perhaps because Newton has no councillor representing it.

Watts has stated before she is against the ward system where each area would have a representative. She believes it creates "infighting." It's true. Without a ward system, there is no in-fighting - councillors can be unanimous in dumping on Newton with impunity.
