LRT option doesn’t deliver

SkyTrain is the sane choice to alleviate congestion.

Re: “TransLink’s plan to battle congestion is insane,” Letters, The Leader, Jan. 6.

In letter writer Malcolm Johnston’s own words, “ The one mode with a proven record of alleviating congestion is modern LRT  because it uses road space for its route, reducing road space for cars while offering a convenient transit alternative.”

Why not go all the way and allow LRT to take up all of the road space, so that delivery trucks will not deliver groceries to your stores, or any other goods to stores you might choose to shop at? No more trucks to deliver parcels and mail to your door. No more trucks to deliver or move your furniture if you need new appliances or decide to move. No taxis to drop you off at your beloved LRT.

To use Johnston’s own words in his last sentence, “Oh, excuse me, that’s a definition for insanity.”

I could not have put it better myself. The letter writer has made a strong case for choosing SkyTrain over LRT. It so happens that most people love their cars and the last thing they want to do is increase congestion. We have too much congestion already.

SkyTrain would reduce congestion by not blocking road traffic and offer an alternative to leaving your car at home, if it makes practical sense to do so. That is the sane thing to do.
