It wasn’t just the warm, sunny weather, or the estimated 600 fans at Cloverdale Athletic Park that made it a perfect day for the Surrey United soccer club.
The Surrey United Firefighters men’s team completed their second Vancouver Metro Soccer League double in as many years, adding an Imperial Cup victory to the Premier Division league championship clinched two weeks earlier. The Firefighters topped ICST Pegasus 3-1 in the cup final Sunday afternoon.
At the same time at South Surrey Athletic Park, United pulled off another double. Randee Hermus, Katie Thorlaksson and Karm Jawanda tallied in a 3-0 win by Surrey over the North Shore Renegades in a Metro Women’s Soccer League (MWSL) cup final. In the MWSL Division One cup final, the Surrey United Selects defeated the Aldergrove Adrenaline in a shootout.
“It was a good day for Surrey United,” said Martin Foden, the club’s executive director and manager of the men’s team. “We won three cup finals in one day, and winning the (VMSL) soccer double twice in a row hasn’t been done too often.”
Angus Burke, Niall Thompson and Rizal Ganieff tallied for the men’s team in their win over Pegasus, who got their only goal from Niko Marcina on a penalty to tie the game 1-1 at the 30-minute mark.
“It was a game between two evenly matched teams,” said Foden. “We had the better scoring chances, but it was even in terms of possession. And it wasn’t really a 3-1 game. They were pressing hard to tie it when we got our third goal.”
Both teams will advance to B.C. Soccer’s Province Cup tournament which will start next month.
