The No. 1-ranked Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers dropped a close game to the Kelowna Owls Sept. 27 on the last play of the game. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Kelowna kicked a walk-off field goal to win the game 10-7.
The score was knotted 0-0 for most of the game. Then, with about five minutes to go, Tweedsmuir’s Tremel States-Jones raced in for a 20-yard touchdown. But the Panthers didn’t stay out front for long. Soon after, Kelowna tossed a 50-yard TD pass to tie the game back up 7-7.
Then in the dying seconds of the game, the Panthers took back-to-back penalties. The penalties turned the Owls’ 33-yard field goal attempt into an 18-yard chip shot.
Easily the star of the game for Tweedsmuir, States-Jones scored the Panthers’ only touchdown, made two interceptions, and recovered two fumbles.
After the loss, Lord Tweedsmuir dropped to 4th in the BC High School Football rankings, while Kelowna moved into a 5th-place spot, tied with Abbotsford.
The Panthers (1-1) next face Abbotsford (2-0) at home Oct. 4 in a must-win game for the squad. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
