Delta athletes ready for the BC Winter Games

Delta will be represented by 26 athletes at the B.C. Winter Games, which will take place Feb. 20-23 in Mission.

More than 1,800 athletes, nearly 350 coaches and more than 140 officials expected to take part.

Seven athletes are on the Fraser River Delta (Zone 4) ringette team, which placed first at the 2012 B.C. Winter Games in Vernon. Sydney Fines, Kelly Landrigan, Bailey Mitchell, Amanada Mott, Stephanie Needham, Marisa Shepard and Lauren Zayonc will be hoping to defend the gold.

Gymnast Michelle Anderton is heading to her second Winter Games competition, having been part of the Zone 4 team which won the bronze medal in the team event two years ago in Vernon. Sophi Anderson, Que Bidewell, Alex Lee, Caleb Richmond, Ella Rogers, Cole Schallig and Ryan Woodhead are the other Delta gymnasts competing in Mission.

Jeff Hayes, Travis Meyer, Paul Scholefield and Jeff Trafford will be part of the Fraser River Delta (Zone 4) Special Olympics basketball team.

Shona Bal and Kiki Linders are on the Fraser River Delta hockey team, while Cayden Mackenzie Cook is competing in figure skating. Matthew Cheng, Justin Eng and Natalie VanGrol are in karate, and Peter Li will try for a medal in speed skating.

At the last BC Winter Games in Vernon, the Fraser River Delta team placed sixth overall, with 39 total medals, including 10 gold. The overall team award was won that year by Thompson-Okanagan, with 84 total medals.
