Levi De Waal (19) of the North Delta Devils scored once in a 6-3 victory over the Mission City Outlaws.

A three-goal first period allowed the North Delta Devils to end a three-game winless streak with a 6-3 victory over the Mission City Outlaws Saturday night at the Sungod Arena.

The Devils gave up the game’s first goal, but were the better team over the final 50 minutes of play, and were full credit for the win over a struggling Mission City team which has just six wins in 28 games played in the Pacific Junior Hockey League season.

Scott Mackey of Surrey gave the Outlaws a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the game, but North Delta built a 19-11 shots on goal advantage in the opening period and were up 3-1 before the first intermission.

Joshua Trisevic tied the game at the 13-minute mark with his seventh goal of the season, then Levi De Waal and Nicholas Lee tallied in the final two minutes of the period.

Mission got one goal back 11 seconds into the second period, before Lee tallied his second of the game a minute later. The Outlaws drew to within 4-3 after 40 minutes, but an unassisted goal from Matthew Painchaud with seven minutes remaining and an empty net tally from Latrell Charleson of Surrey with one second left added to the North Delta lead.

Charleson’s goal was his first of the season in just his second game in the Devils lineup.

Blake Gorrill and Arvin Atwal each collected two assists for North Delta.

Tyler Read turned aside 29 of 32 shots in the Devils goal.

Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill, with Mission earning three powerplay opportunities to North Delta’s one.

The Devils improved to 15-11-3-1 (won-loss-overtime loss-tied), and are four points up on the fourth-place Grandview Steelers in the Tom Shaw Conference.

The Devils play their final two games before the Christmas break next weekend, visiting the Abbotsford Pilots Friday night before hosting the North Vancouver Wolf Pack Saturday at 6:45 p.m. in the Sungod Arena.

The Wolf Pack are in the basement (fifth place) of the Tom Shaw Conference standings, two points back of Grandview and with two games in hand on both the Steelers and Devils.
