The KPU (Kwantlen Polytechnic University) Eagles failed to make up ground in the playoff race in the Pacific Western Athletic Conference’s women’s basketball league.
The Eagles fell 56-42 Friday night to the Camosun Chargers of Victoria, then dropped a 56-42 decision to the Vancouver Island University Mariners Saturday afternoon.
At 3-7 (won-lost), KPU is tied with the Douglas College Royals for the final playoff position and are just a game behind the Capilano Blues and Langara Falcons.
Second-year forward Amber Lee Kavanagh paced the Eagles with 17 points and 15 rebounds in the two games, including a team-best 12 points against the Mariners.
Fourth-year centre Samantha McPhail was the top scorer against Camosun, netting 10 points.
The women’s team has a pair of key games this weekend, visiting the Royals Friday and Langara on Saturday evening.
The Eagles men’s team fell to 1-9 and are two games out of the top six. KPU couldn’t hang on to an 11-point lead with three minutes remaining and lost a close 81-79 decision to the Chargers Friday night.
On Saturday against the first-place Mariners, the Eagles fell 96-45.
Fourth-year centre Devan Haynes was the weekend’s top scorer for KPU with 26 points. Ali Bosir, a fifth-year forward and a graduate of Princess Margaret Secondary in Surrey, tallied 14 points and 19 rebounds to go with six assists.
