Gold for Ingvaldson

Lord Tweedsmuir athlete is Fraser Valley shot put champion

Cloverdale’s Ben Ingvaldson was among the gold medalists at the Fraser Valley High School Track and Field Championships last week in Coquitlam.

The Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary student won the gold medal in the boys shot put, and added a silver medal in the discus.

Ingvaldson had a throw of 14.86m in the shot put for a winning margin of just eight centimeters.

In the discus, Ingvaldson was three metres behind the winner with a best throw of 44.36m.

At last year’s provincial championships, Ingvaldson won a silver medal in shot put, was fifth in the discus and placed eighth in the hammer throw.

Jasmine Gill of Sullivan Heights Secondary earned a pair of silver medals.

In the girls 400m race, she was one of two runners to finish in less than a minute. Gill crossed the line in 58.25 seconds, roughly a half-second back of the winner.

In the 800m race, Gill finished in 2:18.99. She was 3.5 seconds behind the winner and ore than 4.5 seconds ahead of the bronze medalist. Gill placed ninth at last year’s provincial championships, missing the final by one position.

In the field events, Omar Rostant, Brent Reston, Sarah Buckingham and Avneet Nijjar won silver medals.

Rostant, a student at Holy Cross high school, placed second in the boys 400m with a run of 52.80 seconds, 2.1 seconds out of first place.

Reston won his silver medal in the boys javelin with a throw of 50.47m. The Surrey Christian high school student was 25cm behind the winner.

Buckingham, from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, was second in the triple jump with a best effort of 10.52 metres, just 17 centimeters away from first place.

In the shotput, Nijjar had a throw of 10.97 to place second. The Queen Elizabeth Secondary student was one metro out of first place, and 1.21 metres ahead of the bronze medalist, Sarah Van der Ende of Surrey Christian high school.

The bronze by Van der Ente was one of three won by students from Surrey schools.

Stephanie Mernagh of Lord Tweedsmuir won the bronze medal in the girls 200m race, her time of 26.97 was 1.2 seconds off the pace of the first place sprinter.

Nathan Tadesse of North Surrey Secondary was third in the boys 800m, finishing in 1:59.39, while James Hellner of Pacific Academy high school was third in the boys high jump with a leap of 1.75m.
