The Valley West Hawks shut down the Cariboo Cougars Saturday afternoon, but couldn’t stop the visitors from Prince George in a rematch Sunday.
The Hawks opened their two-game B.C. Hockey Major Midget League set with Cariboo with a 4-1 win, then dropped the rematch 7-2.
The Hawks remain in a first place tie in the 11-team league with a 4-2-0 (won-lost-tied) record, the same record as Cariboo and the Greater Vancouver Canadians.
Langley forwards Kyle Raymond, Danton Heinen and Ryan Rensby had the Hawks in a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes in the first game. After the Cougars got on the board to pull to within two goals, Ram Brar of Surrey jammed home a powerplay marker in the last minute of play to clinch the victory.
The Cougars dominated Sunday’s game, leading 2-0 and 4-0 at the period breaks, and tallying three more times in the third period before Daniell Lange and defenceman Jordan Klimek, both of Langley, netted goals for the Hawks.
Valley West will be in Victoria this weekend for games Saturday and Sunday against the 1-3-2 South Island Thunderbirds.
