The first official launch of the 2012 BC Summer Games will take place Saturday (Feb. 18) at a Community Awareness Event at Guildford Town Centre.

Organizers of the BC Summer Games, to take place this summer in Surrey, are inviting families to attend from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the food court at Guildford Town Centre.

BC Summer Games alumna and 2004 Olympic pole-vaulter Stephanie McCann will speak about the impact of the BC Summer Games on her life and her competitive career.  McCann took part in the Port Alberni 1992 BC Summer Games and went on to win four national championships and bronze medals at the Commonwealth and Pan American Games. Her leap of 4:40 metres was good enough for 10th place at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Other speakers include Surrey City Councillor and Surrey 2012 BC Summer Games co-chair Linda Hepner and Kelly Mann, President and CEO of the BC Games Society.

The award-winning Surrey Children’s Choir will kick-off the event at 11:30 a.m. with the performance of the Surrey Games theme song Because We Dream, co-composed by Surrey resident Doug Johnson, keyboardist of legendary British Columbia recording artists Loverboy.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the Surrey 2012 BC Summer Games is encouraged to attend as Director of Registration and Results Vince McKay will be on hand to lead the call to action and to provide information on volunteer registration.

There will also be entertainment, treats, and opportunities for volunteers to sign up for the Games. (Please RSVP to info@tourismsurrey.com or call 604-531-6646.)

Volunteers have been named to oversee 16 directorates, each of which will oversee a specific role in the B.C. Summer Games operations, in areas such as accommodation, administration, transportation, promotion, food services, medical, security, registration and results.

Close to 4,000 volunteers will be needed to staff the games.

The BC Summer Games takes place July 19-22 at venues in Surrey, Abbotsford and Langley.

More than 2,800 young athletes will compete in 21 sports, such as soccer, swimming, rowing, wrestling, softball and more.
