Huge medal haul for local athletes at B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo

Amanda Moore of Surrey (173) won a gold medal in the 4x100m and 300m sprints at the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo.

The B.C. Summer Games wrapped up in Nanaimo Sunday afternoon, with local athletes helping lift the Fraser Valley (Zone 3) team to the top of the medal standings.

Surrey sent roughly 140 athletes to Nanaimo to compete in the 19 sports, comprising a large part of the Fraser Valley. Zone 3 finished atop the medal standings with 207 medals, 80 of which were gold.

Delta had approximately 81 athletes in Nanaimo as part of the Fraser River Delta (Zone 4) squad. Zone 4 was fourth in the medal standings, with 83 medals, including 26 gold.

Haley Down of Surrey helped add to the medal count with three gold medals in equestrian competition, one with the Zone 3 team and two others in individual competition.

“I wasn’t nervous, I as just excited,” Down said after her second individual gold medal Saturday morning.
