Women’s basketball team to face Quest Kermodes in playoffs

As it turned out, the Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) Eagles didn't need the victory in their final game of the Pacific Western Athletic Conference (PACWEST) women's basketball season.

But a dominant 85-50 decision over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats Friday night at the Surrey campus of KPU gave them sole possession of sixth place and the final PACWEST playoff position. Their 7-14 (won-lost) record was a game up on the seventh-place Langara Falcons, but even with a loss, KPU would have advanced to the postseason after sweeping their three head-to-head matches.

The Eagles will face the Quest Kermodes (16-5) in the quarterfinal round of the PACWEST playoffs today (Thursday) at Douglas College in New Westminster.

The Eagles will be led by Shilpa Khanna, a first-year player from Fleetwood Park Secondary in Surrey, and forward Samantha McPhail.

Shilpa finished fifth in PACWEST scoring this past season why an average of 11.81 point spec game, and was second in assists with a 3.0 average. The guard was named the PACWEST Rookie of the Year.

McPhail, from Vancouver, was fourth in the conference in rebounding with an average of 8.33 per game.

The Kermodes won all three meetings with KPU with the average margin of victory being seven points.

The KPU men's team closed our their season with a second consecutive victory, topping the Columbia Bible College Bearcats 87-76.

Fifth-year forward Ali Bosir was the top performer for the Eagles, scoring 25 points and grabbing 18 rebounds, and just missed a triple double as he also had eight assists. The Princess Margaret Secondary graduate earned the PACWEST Player of the Week award for his efforts in his final game of his collegiate career. He also led the PACWEST in rebounding, with 10.25 per game.

KPU completed the regular season with a 5-16 record, two games shy of a playoff position.
