An eighth place finish at the BC Senior 1A Boys High School Basketball Championships at the Langley Events Centre has raised the bar for the Khalsa Lions.

The Surrey school, playing in its first-ever provincial tournament, achieved its goals during this past season, just the second as a senior boys team.

And while coach Doug Wong said the result could have been a bit better, the effort put forth by the Lions over four games sets the team up well for next year.

“I think we could have played in the fifth/sixth game,” said Wong of his Lions team which lost the last three games of the tournament following a first-round win. “We’ve done a lot, we’ve climbed a big mountain. But there’s still a lot to do.”

Khalsa could have played in that fifth/sixth place game this afternoon, but they lost 84-72 to the Credo Christian Kodiaks Friday afternoon.

The Lions trailed by just five late in the game before the Kodiaks finished the contest with an 8-1 run.

Amrit Mangat paced the Lions with 25 points. Jaskirat Sandhu netted 19 points,  including six treys, with Harkerat Bhangu adding 13 points

Playing for seventh place this morning (Saturday), Khalsa fell 85-75 to the Sparwood Spartans.

“I’m so proud of the strides we’ve made, it’s just tremendous,” said Wong. “We put some team goals out there and we’ve met them all.

Breakers split last two games

After two losses, the Pacific Academy Breakers got their first win of the Senior 2A Boys tournament with an 88-66 win over the Smithers Gryphons Friday morning at the Langley Events Centre.

The Breakers, seeded sixth for the tournament, dropped their final game this morning 92-87 to the George Elliott Coyotes.
